The class emphasizes the study of literature in a way that reveals to the writer, the strategies and issues of particular points of craft rather than criticism. Our current emphasis, Moving Through Time and Space, deals with the necessary transitions in a memoir going from one time period to another, from one location to another. We read memoir that move in a linear fashion about a very specific period of time and others that use time as a backdrop for theme. Place, which is often identified with characters’ origins, shifts memoir in displacing or re-placing the character.
